Laptop screen grainy

I've noticed now on my laptop that the screen seems slightly grainy, especially on different colors. If I open a new window, the white portion appears to have a lot of microscopic black dots. When I run it on battery, the screen seems to pulsate like when you see computer screens on TV. Overall the screen just seems rather dim.
 
Also note it happens intermittently. Right now the screen is fine. When I started this thread it was grainy.
 
After being good for about 24 hours, it's back to being grainy. It's like there is a dirt film over the screen. Does this sound like a bad screen? It has integrated graphics so could it be something with the motherboard?
