Laptop screen help

My Acer 5300 laptop, and is only, 7 months old. Lately my screen gets very dim at times, then would brighten up back to normal. As of today, it is all dim and not brightening back up? Whats wrong?
 
Many laptops will be brighter when they're plugged in. When they are running on batteries, the system my run the display at a different brightness to conserve power. Does it do it while running off AC power?

Also, inverters are the most common part to go in LCD screens, but 7 months does sound quick. Has the unit been dropped or banged recently? Is it under a warranty?
