Laptop screen too bright for use in car at night

i use a laptop in my car for navigation purposes.

at night the screen is too bright for safe driving, even when set to the lowest brightness level.

is there a way to make it dimmer without adding an additional privacy screen?

some kind of software that would allow me to lower the brightness would be very cool, does something like that exist?

well, i found a solution.

i downloaded and installed a program called Powerstrip. it lets you do some pretty advanced stuff with resolution and color settings.
