Laptop shutting off randomly

My Asus Eee has just recently started shutting off by itself. It usually happens either right after turned on, or a few (3-10) minutes after booting up. If it makes it past 10 minutes without turning off, I can use it for hours with no problems at all.

Also, I don't know if this matters, but it makes a strange "kablip" sound when it turns itself off.

Any thoughts?

Almost sounds like hardware/motherboard problems. The noise you hear's probably the hard drive. They can make odd noises when they shut down suddenly. Usually it's from parking the head.

Is it running Windows? Maybe try running it in Linux for a while (assuming you have an external optical drive or can load it from a flash drive)

Although this does not appear to be a blocked fan issue, it could be so. When the laptop goes off, pehaps at low speed a fan catches on some of the dirt. Next start it may have trouble running due to higher resistance. Try blowing out the fans and ducting with dustbuster or (controlled) compressed air. The amount that comes out of the closed case may give an indication if the case needs to be taken apart.

If you have a MB utility, start it up as soon as possible on boot and check CPU temp.

A "kablip" does sound more like a hard drive issue! Fan stopping abruptly is more likely to be a "whirr..soft thud...silence". There is little you can do with the HDD other than run the vendor's maintenance software for drive health.
