laptop suggestions

i am thinking about getting a new laptop and i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

now i have one and it has like a 17" screen and it is very large and heavy. my dad went all out when he got it for me. like there are so many programs he got for the computer and i have downloaded some too. some problems that i have had with it is that the fans on it are loud and the battery last about 20 mins.

so i was thinking about getting a new one. i want one that is quiet and smaller and lighter. i just really want to be able to run word and the internet and download some programs. i want it so i can take it to class with me or work on it somewhere besides being tied down with the power cord. so i want it to have a longer lasting battery. i would like it to be cheaper but i would also like to have plenty of memory space on it.

if anyone has any suggestions please let me know. thanks!

If you have the money, go for a macbook. Those are simple for portability, word processing, and internet. Otherwise, go for a cheap dell.

"cheap" dell

I just bought a "cheap" dell 15.4" widescreen. It is a Vostro model from the small business section. I was told that it is better to buy from Dell's small business because the tech support is better. Anyway, it is a Vostro 1500 with a 1.4 core 2 duo processor, 120 gig HD, 2 gig ram, Vista premium, 128 meg video card, the 85 amp battery, Intel g wireless, bluetooth, DVD+RW, for under $700. I spent a lot of time looking for a decent model for work with enough power and this was the most for the money that I could find. I ordered it on a Thursday and got it the next Tuesday. I can run the screen on full brightness and the battery lasts for over 4 hours. It runs cool enough to actually sit on my lap for hours without discomfort. It is not the lightest laptop I've ever used, but it is not bad - a good compromise I'd say. I'd suggest going with Vista rather than XP -it is a lot more stable than XP. But, you need 2 gigs ram for it to give you the best speed. You could load this up with a larger video card, 4 gig ram, a faster processor, and still not top $1000

the budget is pretty much up to my parents and considering that i already have a laptop, they probably wont let it be that much. i would guess around $1000 at the most though

faitschb, does it matter if i buy from dell from the small business section even i am just getting the computer for me at home? do you know if there is a difference buying from the businesses section and the home section?
