I am a really big fan of H.P. computers my old H.P. desk unit has worked great for years. I just bought two new laptops one is a Acer E-442 e-machine the other is a H.P. Pavilion dv6,
Both bought from Best Buy and both have Windows 7 installed, both worked right out of their box's. Best Buy checks each new computer and makes sure they are working correctly. It's worth a small amount more to buy from someone I trust, and I trust my local Best Buy.
So I advise you to look into buying your wife a H.P. laptop, and I highly recommend buying it from Best Buy. ;-)

For a $1000 you get her a very nice system. Consider Lenovo's excellent Thinkpad T Series and their new Thinkpad Edge series. You can go to their site and configure various possibilities.

An Intel i5 processor, 4 gigs of memory, and Windows 7 64-bit OS would do her very well.

Asus also makes very good systems. Their K and X models are entry level so I suggest their U series might fit the bill.

Check out the Notebookreview website and their forums. A lot of good solid information.
