laptop to repair?

I would get the specs on it before you get it. Depending on how old it is and how much money you have to put it into it, you may not get it back. Most of the time laptops aren't worth repairing and selling. Just from the pictures of it though, i wouldn't do it.

I do this sort of thing quite commonly, but I would hardly say that installing RAM and an HDD and buying a charger is "repairing". But if you can pick that one up for cheap then you should be able to turn it around for a nice profit.

confused now, im getting two people telling me to do the oposite of each other.
i messaged the seller asking for specs, someone just bid on the laptop so il see if its worth bidding against him.
dont really mind if its not technically repairing but i want to see if i can sell it for a profit to gain some spare money.

i didnt buy it after, although i did bid on a apple G3 ibook that was in bits, but i didnt win.
going to take another look for a better one

bought this for £22 (p&p included)

wasnt interested in the toshiba t8100 but i did want the two bases, ones a compaq and the others a nec. both have motherboards fitted so i may see if i can get them fixed and maybe keep the one because my laptop monitor is broke.
not too sure about the water damage on the compaq base, dont know how extensive that is but i should be able to see when i recieve it.

so, do you guys think its a good buy?

Well, I'd say you probably bought a load of junk there. The Compaq is water damaged so it's likely trash, so all you're left with is a NEC base which you don't know the specs of. Even assuming that it's in working condition and has decent specs, by the time you buy the RAM, HDD, WiFi card, CD drive, keyboard, power button, hinges cover, ram cover, HDD bracket, HDD cover, WiFi Card Cover, LCD, and upper housing there is no way you'll come out ahead. That's of course, also assuming that you can find all of these pieces which is unlikely for an off brand like NEC.

Now I've repaired my fair share of laptops, so maybe I can give you a few pointers. First of all, the most important thing for you to do when buying a broken laptop is be certain that the motherboard works. Replacement motherboards can often cost more than what the laptop is worth for resell, so usually the only reason to by a laptop with a broken motherboard would be to use the parts in another laptop. There are some exceptions to this, and occasionally you can find a decent deal on a working replacement mobo on eBay, but this is not something you should count on.

Nextly, stick with name brands. That pretty much narrows it down to HP, Dell, Compaq, Sony, Toshiba, Gateway, ASUS, and Acer. Other brands such as Samsung, Lenovo, Fujitsu etc are still good brands, but spare parts will be harder to find so if you'll want to make sure that you can find them and they are affordable before making the purchase. Completely avoid off brands.

Finally, calculate the repair cost before purchasing. Keep in mind all of the things you'll need to get it functioning. Batteries in particular are important to keep in mind, because a laptop without a good battery has a greatly reduced resell value, but replacement batteries can be quite expensive. Chargers, however, are usually cheap ($10-$20), assuming you're willing to wait the 2 weeks or more it will take to get a knockoff from China.

ok thanks for the advice, im going to message the seller and ask how extensive the water damage is.
il just wait now and see what they are like when they arrive.

got the laptops now, the toshiba is a T8100 and looks pretty decent. the compaq water damage seems pretty bad, should i post some pics and see what you guys think?

the toshiba only needs a hard drive and RAM and its also missing all the screws (he only left one in...). im planning on giving it to my dad for his birthday on saturday, so im going to order them later today.

bit dissapointed with the decription the seller gave though, im noticing that on one of the panels for the monitor it seems to be slightly melted.

i have bought the RAM and hard drive for the toshiba, need to get the charger now. i dont think il sell it for a while, untill i get the rest sorted out,its a nice little laptop and would be good to carry around if i remove the cd drive.
