Laptop to TV issues

I wasn't sure where a thread like this would belong so I'll post it in here...

So, I've been trying to hook up my Laptop to my CRT TV and I've had some success...
1) I've been able to use a "headphone-to-rca" converter to feed the sound into my TV (which works, but only when I turn on my PS2 and put the video feed from the PS2 into that same active AV... So that works alright but i have to look at my PS2 mainscreen while I listen to the music from my laptop.
2) I've also been able to transmit the video signal from my laptop to my TV using an S-Video connection, which worked perfect. My computer recognized the TV right away.

The problem is that I want to do both at the same time - listen to the music and watch my visualizations entirely over the TV while being transmitted from my laptop.

I found a little gadget on eBay for a couple dollars, so I bought it and gave it a shot... but it's not working.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, if the device itself just won't work, or if I need to fix something from within my computer.

I drew a little picture of my current (not-working) setup:

Maybe someone here will have a suggestion for me.

You can make it much more simpler than you have it.

For video, use S-Video

For audio, use the 3.5mm (headphone) to RCA cable
 
I wish that were the case!

With my TV, I can only select either AV1, AV2, or S-VIDEO... one at a time.
Otherwise, yes I wouldn't need such a mess of wires! haha
 
You're problem, as I'm sure you realize, is that your TV will only accept audio and video either only though S-Video or only through component (RCA), and not any mixture of the two. All you need to do is pick up an S-Video to component video adapter, a little think that looks like this:

You can probably grab one at Walmart or RadioShack for $5, or on eBay for probably $3. You'll also need to get a male/male component video cable, again for the same price:

You'll plug the S-Video adapter into your lappy, and then the component cable into that and run it to one of the component inputs on the TV. Then you'll run the headphone to RCA converter to the left and right audio component inputs that correspond to the video input (either AV1 or AV2, your choice).

In this way, you will be able to transfer the video and audio to your TV.
 
Oh! When I was looking for converters long ago I did not see the s-video-to-component adapter...

I'm pretty sure that would work, haha! Thank you.

I'll give eBay a shot and tell you how it all works out. :)
