Laptop unable to function with only AC adapter

I'm not really sure how to label this problem, but when I turn on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 700m) the battery drains even though it's plugged into the AC adapter. I know that initially one would say that there might be a problem with the AC adapter or the battery, but this has happened to me twice before. Also, the battery charges when my computer is shut off. The first time the problem fixed itself without me really knowing, and my computer would charge as normal. The second time it began to happen I noticed it was fixed after I was informed that "Malicious Software" had been removed from my computer. But now, a couple days after the problem was fixed, it's beginning to happen again. I've scanned my computer for viruses and whatnot, but nothing came up.

With this problem my computer runs in a seemingly normal way, but since it's plugged into the AC adapter the computer runs down the battery completely until it shuts off without warning

It's just the battery I'm guessing. How long have you had the laptop?
Batteries wear down very fast and may not retain charges after a while of usage.
If the laptop is semi-new, I'd call Dell up and ask about it -- Your insurance should cover it, and if not, a new battery probably isn't the most expensive thing.

it says that the ac adapter is plugged in and that it's charging, but really it's running off the battery. i would agree with that, but i just got this battery about a year ago because of some battery recall and also the fact that the problem went away for a few days
