Laptop USB question

Okay I have an older emachines laptop and would like to add an external hard drive to the computer that hooks in through the usb and is powered by the usb for easy on the go access. The bigger hard drives all say that they need the USB 2.0 connection and mine only has the 1.1. Now my question is that if I get a hard drive that is suppose to use the 2.0 and connect it to my usb 1.1 is it just going to be slower access because it is an older connection or will it not work at all because it needs the 2.0? If it is just a matter of the transfer speed, I am not to concerned about that, the external hard drive is just for extra storage and not to be accessed all the time. Now if it does need the 2.0, would be my only option be to get a pcmcia usb 2.0 card for my computer? I have searched around but didn't really find the answer I was looking for. Any help from anyone is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It should work fine with the usb1.1 ports.
As you stated the only difference should be the slower transfer speeds.
