Laptop vs Spaghetti

My son-in-law thought it would be a great idea to eat spaghetti and play Battlefront at the same time. Needless to say the laptop bit the dust. Some fluid stuff instantly found it's way under the keyboard and touched something important. It won't turn on anymore. Good thing he bought insurance when he purchased the laptop.

Was he trying to use the laptop as a plate or something? How did he manage to do that?

He had a cell phone in one hand and a plate of spaghetti in the other. With the cell phone hand he tried to push a key on the keyboard and lost balance of the plate. Rookie move. Over the years I've seen lots of keyboard abuse, but this is the first time I've seen one with spaghetti on it.

Hmm I must remind myself not to do that when I next have spaghetti in my front of my laptop. Thanks for the tip! ;)

He turned the laptop off and unplugged it immediately, but that didn't help. This is the first laptop I've seen where you can't remove the battery. Strange.

And it looks like a nice laptop too

Yeah it was.

Specs:

Intel Core i7 6700HQ
16GB DRR4
NVIDIA GTX980M
1x SSD 256GB, 1x SATA 1TB
Blu-Ray drive
17" IPS at 1920x1080
2x speakers with subwoofer

It's a beast...weighs 4.4 kg (9.7 pounds)

I'm pretty sure if he didn't buy insurance from where he purchased the laptop, Asus offers 1 time accidental warranty coverage on their laptops.

Many ultrabooks do not have removable batteries. It's not uncommon to not have a removable battery.

I can see why an Ultrabook doesn't have a removable battery, but this thing is big and thick, there's a lot of space for a removable battery. The only reason I can think of, is maybe they thought users wouldn't be running it on battery too much because of the size, weight and energy requirements of this particular model.

Even with like a 10 cell battery for a laptop with those specs... you'll be lucky to last 15 minutes if you're playing games. lol

Ahh... I feel bad for you... not a huge fan of laptops personally but I have to admit, this one was decent.

That thing really smells like spaghetti sauce with cheese. Here's a scenario: I repackage it, give it to the driver who in turn puts in the back of a sun baked transporter, it gets shuffled around for a day or two, finally the technician at Asus opens it up and croaks from the god-awful smell.

It's a 6 cell battery (67 Whrs)

So do you seriously think ASUS is going to repair this? They're going to charge an arm and a leg if they do because I'd be amazed if they do it under 'accidental damage warranty'. They will probably just ship you a new unit if you send this back.

I received the repair bill from Asus, which in turn was sent to the insurance company that's covering my son-in-laws laptop.

Here's the breakdown:
  • Bottom case assembly - 34 Euros
  • Cable - 27 Cents
  • Keyboard - 72 Euros
  • Intel I7 6700HQ - 830 Euros
Total (including the time it takes to repair) - 1009 Euros

I have repaired quite a few PCs and laptops over the years and when a short occurred from a liquid spill, it wasn't only the CPU that was affected. Also that CPU is ridiculously priced. I checked online and Intel sells those CPUs to Asus at $378 each. At current exchange rates that's around a $547 markup passed on to the customer.

I'm surprised it wasn't covered by Asus' 1 year accidental warranty.

As for the CPU, majority of the processors on laptops are soldered on rather than surface mounted. Makes repairs a bit more difficult. I wouldn't doubt that they just went and replaced the whole motherboard.

Only valid in North America.

In the G752V the CPU isn't soldered to the board.
