Laptop Will Not Connect with Wireless

I have alaptop using Windows XP and I take it to work and I connect fine I bring it home and when I attempt to connect to my home wireless network it connects but I receive limited connectivity and cannot go online. The wireless in my home is functioning properly as i can connect fine with my phone.

I even tried connecting the laptop via an ethernet cable to an open spot on the back of my modem/router and that will not even get me online (just local connectivity)

any ideas? The router/modem is a Motorola Surfboard SBG6580

Do you have it set to automatically get IP address from dhcp server or do you have a static IP set for work purposes? Your work static IP won't work at home, you will have to change it every time.

I have the network adapter preferences set to obtian IP automatically and I also noticed when doing an ipconfig at the cmd prompt that there is no defailt gateway listed.... could that be it?

Do you have security on your home network? Vista is not very friendly with router with security. I had this problem before, I had to upgrade the router's firmware before I can use the security access. Try turn off the security on your home network to see if the laptop connect ok. if it does then is the router cause the problem.
Cheers.

Yeah, if there is no default gateway listed, then you aren't connected to your router or modem.

Go figure..... woke up this morning to give it another try and as soon as I started the laptop up it connected..... I bet I restarted that this 5 times yesterday!
