laptop with trojans

lovely?

well a friend of mine has used and abused her laptop so badly that the poor thing has pretty much ceased to work. when turned on the computer prompts you for a password, i type it in and then the computer loads, and goes to the desktop. only problem at this point is, i have a cursor and a desktop background, and that is it. CTRL/ALT/DEL has no effect. right clicking does nothing.

now my theory is that an antivirus found virus's in her computer and deleted all infected files. i also believe that windows itself was badly infected, so many files were deleted straight from windows. (that happens, no?) so now the desktop window manager (or whatever its called for xp,) is damaged and no longer works. now all of this is only theory so if you have an idea or an opinion then please help me out. also if there is any way to restore windows files without starting the computer that would be a big help too. (note:there are sensitive and important files on the computer that cannot be deleted)

Well run:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • You can also access the log in the Logs tab of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

In your reply pls post:
  • Malwarebytes' Log
  • Fresh Hijackthis Log

Also posting a hijackthis log

If after that you are still infected, please post a Hijackthis log. To post a Hijackthis log, please do the following:

* Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
* Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
* By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
* Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
* Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
* Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
* At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
* Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
* Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
* Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
* DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

We will look at your log as soon as we see it, and give you further instructions on how to fix your computer. Most of the time it will involve downloading more programs that will either give us logs to locate the malware or delete those malware.

Once you have posted a HJT Thread DO NOT make any changes to your PC unless the advisor helping you has instructed you to do so!

To get the taskbar - type explorer.exe into run, to get into run, hit "windows key" + R

So explorer.exe won't work right? Basically no taskbars, start button or anything?

Bummer.

Cohen, please stop posting your collection of stolen canned speeches! If you want to help, point people in the direction of the Sticky, that's what it's for!

@ OP, I assume you get the same result in safemode?

im not sure i have not tried safemode yet. how would i get that option to come up on startup?

hey buzz your me hero! i shut down the laptop while windows was starting and the next time is turned on, the option for safe mode came up. i went into msconfig (using the indows task manager since ctrl/alt/del since the start bar still wasnt there,) turned a few settings on (that were disabled for absolutely no reason) and now on normal startup the computer works flawlessly.

so now i have to scan for malware and get all those trojans off the computer lol. but thank you so much!

Follow those instructions and then post all of the logs in a reply.

anyways, now the computer is running at full speed, which is only 1.6ghz considering it has a sempron 2800 under the hood hahaha.
