laptop woe...

my friend gave me his sony vaio because it randomly stopped working.
he claims that it worked fine the night before, and now it wont turn on, no lights, nothing.
even with power, no charge light.
i took it apart, checked the AC internal cable, all attatched, working ok, tried a replacement bodged one that i made, still nothing.
the battery works, but when looking for problems its always best to assume it doesnt. it cant be the AC adapter because its in perfect condition.
i also checked for a faulty power switch. tried shorting the 2 connections with a paperclip to power on. still nothing.
im more of a pc man, so do laptops have a PSU? as i couldnt see one. or is that what the box on the AC adapter is?
i doubt it needs a bios reset, so i thought it hardly worth the effort to take out the motherboard and do the battery on the underside.
any suggestions?

i fix notebooks for a living; it would be best to confirm the AC adaptor on another machine really; if it works i would say that the mainboard is dead, however there are some machines with a separate power board that attatches to the mainboard. Also check the condition of the power adaptor socket.

AC adapter is in pretty much perfect condition all over, the green light goes on on it, and it doesnt feel loose at either end.
is there anything else i should check for that i havnt done already?
my first impression was a dead motherboard too.
i cant test the ac adapter though, because i dont know anyone with a vaio, and im a secret nerd, my social saving secret :D
i wouldnt be able to go up to my other vaio friend and say 'let me test my AC adapter to see if my friends motherboard is blown'

you could test the out put from a digital multimeter; in my experience the condition of the unit and if the green light is on is never an indication of if its working. I see you live in plymouth, you could always take a trip to brewsters in frankfort gate to see if they can help with the diagnosis of the adaptor.

ive just tried it in my hub, probably nearly blew it up, but meh... it was free.
it worked, lights went on, so it cant be the adapter :(
at the moment its on my desk in bits, and im going to start re-assembling. any last checks?
thanks for the help
