Laptop wont boot with RAM ugrade

Hi All,

i have a 5 year old ASUS X5DIJ which received a 2gb ram upgrade about a year ago bringing the ram to the maximum possible with this laptop of 4gb. I am running linux mint 17.1

Last week the laptop was in standby, I hit the power button to get it out of standby and there was absolutely nothing. I powered off thinking a reboot would be in order, tried to reboot but without success! The HD span up, I heard the cd drive spin up also, but I did not even get to the initial bios/boot option selection screen! The screen just stays black. After alot of experimenting I thought I would remove the extra ram card and hey presto, the computer booted normally! I thought that the RAM card was maybe faulty so I ordered another one, but the same problem, so this rules out the card theory. Could the ram card slot be faulty?

I am not too bothered because the laptop has been running on everage 12 hours a day every day for about the last 5 years, however if this is a problem which could potentially be easily remedied then I am open for suggestions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yeah, sounds like a slot issue. However, remove ram from the other slot and put in the other slot and see if it boots up. If it does, then there is something else going on.

not so easy. i only have the one expansion slot available. i see i have an old bios version. could a bios upgrade potentially solve the problem? My gut feeling tells me no as the laptop was working with the ram upgrade for about a year.

Yeah, it seems the other 2gb is soldered to the board. You may be out of luck then. The only other thing you can do is try resetting the cmos by removing the cmos battery(if easy accessible) while being unplugged from charger and laptop battery removed.

think I just need to accept the fact that the slot has developed a fault. I just tried resetting the bios in bios menu, removing the cmos battery but to no avail.
Oh well, now I have something to spend my tax rebate money on :)

thanks anyway for your help!
