laptop wont detect my second monitor

I have a hp pavillion dv6700 laptop and I've connected it to my tochiba hd tv that I have with a VGA cord. The display comes up on both my laptop and the tv but I only want it on the tv. I'm running windows 7 and I went into the display setting and only the monitor to my laptop appears and it's the same in the device manager. I've trying upgrading my display adapter diver but it says its up to date. Any ideas on how to solve my problem?

usually there is a key combo to press to set what you want... fn-f4 i think is the typical or f5.... either way look at the nifty pictures on your laptop and there should be one that looks like a monitor.... press fn and that key.

Yeah I've tried that and both the screens go black but nothing else seems to happen.
