Laptop won't start up after being turned on.

A few days ago I took my Toshiba Satellite A355D-S6922 laptop to a friend's house. When I got there and turned it on it would not start up. It was working fine just a few hours earlier. The laptop turns on and you can hear the disc drive activate and feel the fan working, but then all activity dies down and nothing comes on the screen. It is nothing wrong with the power because it does the same thing without the battery and being connected to a power supply instead. All the lights involving the battery charging and such show up as well when plugged in with the battery. I have looked at the ram and the hard drive and nothing is visually wrong with them. I have also taken the screen casing off and made sure it was plugged in still which it was. I just want to know the possibilities of what's wrong with it before I take it apart any farther with my limited knowledge of what to do.

Also, yesterday, I tried turning it on again and this time it worked. It continued to work throughout the day and then went back to the problem again and hasn't worked again since.

Is it possible to replace the integrated graphics card of a laptop? I've installed a graphics card on a desktop before, but never done it with a laptop.

if it is integrated, then the easiest way is to replace the Motherboard. The graphics card is soldiered to the motherboard, and would take someone that is a pro to replace it. May be worth while to check with Toshiba and see if you still have a warranty on it.

What graphics adapter do you have? As toshiba has some laptops with a dedicated graphics card.

I got this laptop from newegg.com 2 years ago so no warranty. The graphics card was ATI Radeon but I do not remember the other details of it off the top of my head.

How much would it be to replace the motherboard?

looking at the Toshiba website for the equipment for your computer, it has ATI Raedon 3100. Thats a totally integrated card.

There is only 1 on Ebay right now. There may be more later.

Mainboard 1

I would also check locally for laptops of the same model that will post to BIOS, as you could use your HDD and be on your way. Also, their mainboard is the same as yours so you would not have an issue

If I have to spend 200+ on a new motherboard it is sounding like I just need to try and hold off for a bit until I can upgrade to a new laptop and just recover everything from my old HDD. Thank you for your help though.

I understand that. I just spent $399 on a new laptop to avoid having to pay HP $299 plus shipping both ways for a replacement screen and $99 on windows. Now I have 2 working computers and 1 semi mobile PC. lol.

Walmart local has a toshiba that has a sempron and Raedon 3100 graphics for 389 if you are looking to have a computer near to what you have now.

You will also need a SATA external cable to get the data off of your HDD when you get a new one. Newegg carries these for next to nothing.

Hmmmm...if you said that it worked and then that it did not work and then again it worked and now again it's not working then it's kinda hard to believe that it's the graphic card problem.Because if the graphic card do not work then your laptop would NOT start working again that day.

Before you spend ANY money,my advice is to completely open that laptop and take a look at the cooler and cooling paste on that graphic card and check ALL other wire connections and cooling pastes. Also check the fan and the wires which connects the screen to the motherboard. So check ALL the wires, make sure that they are not damaged or improperly connected!

Cheers!
