Laptop won't start up

Hi Guys,
I have an old toshiba laptop running windows xp, 390 megs of ram. When I started it up yesterday a strange message on a black screen appeared. Its starts by saying; We apoligize for the inconveience but Windows did not star successfully.

IT goes on to say that I can start in;

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Prompt Command
Start Windows Normally

I try to start up by selecting Stars Windows Normally and it just reverts back to the same black screen with the message.

Can anyone help me with this?
Would really be appreciated, my 13 year old daughter owns it.
Thanks, Leonard

you didn't change anything to it recently? dropped it, bumped it against anything? This error usually comes up when you didn't shut your computer down correctly.

what happens if you try safe mode?

I never tryed it. Don't know too much about computers but will try it and see what happens. I don't think it got any bumps or anything. I put new ram in it last week and it was working fine ever since yesterday.
Thanks for the reply, Leonard
