Laptop won't startup properly

Recently my laptop would not turn on properly...

I turned on the switch and the screen would stay pitch black, no glow or any light would come out of it...At first I thought that the screen is busted so I connected the laptop to my desktop monitor through VGA...still nothing.

The problem is that besides the screen does not display anything...it turns itself back off within 30 seconds...

I have also tried testing the battery pack/adapter...both seems to be working...

my conclusion is either the motherboard is damaged or the power source is dead...

since I am rather new at IT i would like to know what else could be causing my laptop from turning on properly

the laptop wont even light up lol, even pressing fn and f5 does not bring the screen back...keeps shutting on and off for like 20-30 seconds...

and yes there is windows vista x64 on it...but i dont think its the hdd or the ram...

ive taken out the hdd and the ram to try to see if the screen will even startup...still nothing

none of the above...it was factory, i did not upgrade to another OS, it came with vista...it was running fine for 2 years...suddenly...blank screen, no lights, shuts off etc

well the longest its been on is like probably 20-30 seconds at most...then it shuts back down, turns itself back on...then repeat like one or two more times before it shuts down for good

Have you got a Windows disc or a backup disc handy?? If it'll boot off either, than were getting somewhere.

that was one of the first thing i did, put a recovery disk in there, but as i said the screen does not light up...i have tried swapping the two rams...i even took out the hdd to try if it even light up...nothing

Sorry for a repeat question, but no light of any kind light up?? No power light, the HDD light doesn't flash??

the battery charge indicator lights up, the keyboards lights up, the fans run...lets just say all lights that should be visible lights up EXCEPT the screen, no glow, or light emits

Sometimes you can't boot off a recovery disc. If you can get a hold of a Windows disc and boot off of it, then you know you got a corrupt Windows install. If it doesn't boot off the disc, then you got a bad motherboard possibly.

yeh i got plenty of windows CD, vista, 7, XP etc...but none of them work...i mean if i cant even see the screen and the laptop shuts down by itself every 30 seconds...i cant even go to the BIOS

Wondering cause Sony has an issue with there memory slots coming loose. Sounds like a bad hard drive and or motherboard.

yeh i suspect only 3 scenarios...definitely a hardware problem

1. Damaged mobo
2. Bad Ram
3. Damaged PSU

the thing is, i want to make sure so i dont spend the money on the wrong thing...and I dont know how to look...thats why i need a lot of help

yeh it came with 2 sticks...i got 2 other laptops at home but theyre not compatible

see thing is i really hope its not a damaged mobo cuz A. i cant find them online (newegg), and its expensive...

i hope its just ram...once again i cant find any other way to diagnose which hardware went bad
