i was just wondering can you route your cable connection to your laptop wirelessly?for eg.:cable at home, wireless route connection to laptop when im out?if so,what do i need to do this?can someone please help me?sorry guys,im not good with computers.

Yes you cna but if your laptop doesn't have built in wireless connectivity then you will need to either buy a usb adapter that plugs straight into usb and picks up a wireless signal like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833150018
Or if your laptop has card slots you can buy a cardbus adaptor like this that slots into the card slots to pick up a wireless signal:

EDIT: I forgot to add that you will also need a router to send out the wireless signal. This is a very cheap one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833122016

By "Out" do you mean out of 'that room' or nowhere near the house?

If you mean just another room then calumn's links for wireless 'ethernet hardware'(WiFi).

If however you mean that you will be away from your house.... then No. The only way to do this would be to get a Wireless 'Internet card' for you Laptop such as this which uses the 3G mobile phone network

thanks for that.cuz im buying a laptop and it has wireless connectivity.im getting it for uni.so does wireless connectivity mean i just need to get a card bus adaptor?

*scrat*

when i said "out"i meant my cable internet is at home and i want to know if i can route it to my laptop so i can use it at uni.thats what i meant.thanks

by "wireless connectivity" they are normally referring to "WiFi".
Basically this means that instead of plugging a network cable into your laptop and the other end into a modem(ADSL/CABLE/SAT) or local HUB(Intranet), the laptop can do this via radio signals using the built-in "wireless hardware"..... so long as you have a Modem/HUB that supports 'wireless' connections.

Depending on the type of Modem/HUB, and the hardware in your laptop, you can some times get this to work upto a kilometer away from the Modem/HUB before the signal strenght becomes to weak.

No, that would require a very strong signal with no interference. I don't know what country you live in, but if you are in the USA, the FCC would be knocking on your door (more like busting it down) if you were broadcasting wireless to that wide of a range.

LOL.... check this antenna out(24dB Gain) the guys in the shop said they tested it with a wireless camera and got it to work upto 600m away

Oh I know that wifi can be repeated and broadcasted to pretty long distances (but it still is not as reliable as wired) but the FCC regulates that type of stuff and probably would frown upon it. I have bridged several neighbors wireless routers w/ WDS to add like a hotspot street where people can all share one secure wireless network, but in the end it really wasn't that awesome, because of the reliability of consumer end wireless products.

what bout ppl i see using internet on thier laptops on trains, uni, parks etc..what do u fink they use?by d way,TLARKIN,wat time is it up @ kansas city neways?thanks

I know a guy. He has a hookup to his home computer that cost him $200. He has cable TV and his computer comes via cable as well. He has some kind of card that allows him to access his home IP and he can even watch his local TV channels anywhere there is another WIFI network. I saw him watching a ball game then to his mail, then to the internet. Cool stuff. Karl Zopf www.intelliwebhosting.com

Well they are probably using some type of point to point protocol over cellular wireless, which is different than what I was saying. That is a service you purchase through a company, who complies with FCC regulations here in the USA.

Its about 11:30am and I am working lol....doing doc cam installs on workstations as the software loads I surf the net to kill time. Nothing like watching a bar move across a screen
