Large drives

Hi Guys,

I purchased a couple of 3 terabyte HDD's to put into a machine but have had a change of mind and now wish to use them as external back up units, http://www.computerforum.com/images/smilies/redface.gif

I have mounted them in suitable cases but neither of my computers will recognise them as 3 terabytes in fact in both Win 7 and Win 8 the computer will not recognise anything above 750gb, which in itself is strange because I have 1 and 2 terabyte drives both as internal and external units which I use daily without any hassle:). http://www.computerforum.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

Anyone got any thoughts on how I may get to use the full 3 terabyte???????

Thanks

Did you format them as GPT or MBR? With large drives like that they need to be formatted with a GPT partition table in order to be seen as the full 3TB.

Gpt

Yes I have but I still show a 2 terabyte and a 750Gb, I can format the 2 tb section but only create a simple volume for the remainder, is it possible to be able just to have a single 3 tb???

Thanks

I think you misunderstood voyager. You need them to be formatted as GPT rather than Windows-standard MBR.
Looks at this: Convert MBR to GPT - Sevenforums
Note that you will lose all data on the drives during the process, so make a backup if it's important.

now you see it then you don't

THANK YOU GUYS,

One problem down another has arisen that has me bamboozeled.

I did the four drives I had on one machine that is not connected to the net, they were all done one after the other.

Prior to commencing I disconnected every other drive except for the 8.1 os all the 3Tb units were Disk 0 and the OS was disk 3 yet during the course of the operation I noticed that two drives had an extra drive (disk1) showing under disk management and two didn't (sorry don't know how to attach a photo to help explain it better) all the 3tb drives came in with exactly the same space 2700+GB.

any thoughts?????

Thanks again

You do know and understand that you're not going to see a full 3TB, right? To the manufacturer, 1GB = 1000MB, but with Windows 1024MB=1GB. So you're never really going to see 3TB.

Yeah, it's normal. My 2TB drive is 1.81TB, 1TB is around 932GB if I remember correctly. Completely standard.

Yes, my 1TB drives show up as 932GB in Windows, my 2TB as 1.81TB and my 3TB as 2.72TB.

That's perfectly normal.
