Large Problem

I have 2 drives, both CD ROM.
They are both hooked up, but neither work.
The master is recognized and just doesn't work.
The slave isn't even recognized for some odd reason that isn't apparent to me at the moment.
Neither of them read disks, but are hooked up correctly and have power flowing to them.
They are both pretty old, around 5-10 years.
It's only been recently that one of them stopped working, and the other one I just started using, but was salvaged from a bundle of old computer parts.
I have no idea what to do.
Any help?

As suggested, try a good cable first.
If the problem persists, then they are probably dead.
It's not unusual for as old as they are.

I had accumulated 15 of the same age drives at one time because I didn't have time to thin them out.
When I was finally able to check them, 4 worked.
