hello all, basically I have been having problems with speed on the internet for the past two months, telephone lines and boxes all been changed, now they are saying its my computer, I have too many processes operating, usually around 60 to 70. I have put the computer back to zero, completely formatted and I still have the same amounts, I have Vista, I have plenty of RAM memory 4 go usable 2.6, a very large hard disk with not much on it, memory virtuelle usable 6.6 but when the test is done for the internet, it keeps coming back that my memory is minus, I don't know if its my internet provider that is being lazy or do I have a problem, I would so much appreciate it if someone would help me out, I don' want to take the computer to a shop to be ripped off if its not necessary, I did however connect another computer up a lap top and the tests showed the same symptoms but today I borrowed another and it seemed better though the tests always are when the computer or boxes are restarted!

please someone take pity on this poor lady whose birthday it is tomorrow!!!!

many thanks in anticipation

freda

Do as johnB35 says and run the speedtest

but if you re-install vista and also checked the connection on a different computer and still had the same results it is going to be an issue with the line or the router/modem who is your isp?

How far away are you from the test server? The reason why im asking is cause you somewhat have a high ping time. Do you know what internet speed you are paying for? Are you on dsl or cable? You could have a bad network card or driver.

the ping can vary also sometimes 42 up to 188, I am paying for 8 somethings? sorry! I am connected by ethernet, the card and box have all been changed, could my computer be the problem thats what I need to know?

How old is the computer? According to your speedtest, you are getting somewhere close to your rated internet speed. You might want to try updating your network card driver. The only way to tell if its your computer is to have a different computer there and do speedtests now and then. Are you running virus and malware programs on your computer to keep it clean? Infections may cause this problem your having.

6.88 is very high if your paying for upto 8Mb on dsl, in the uk max sync is 7.2Mb (cause bt reserve part of the line) with probably around the speed you have for throughput so line speed is good.

how are you connecting wired or wireless? and when you connected the other computers was it the same method?
it is quite likely what johnb35 said to do will work but i find it strange that the same things happen on different machines

speed test

i have just done the speed test again I have 249 debit descendant and 685 of total debit, processeur is being used at 4% but the memory says -82097%,
the computer is around 3 yrs old, its opens everything else fast and turns on and off quickly? I have to connect the other computer up to see what its speed is now, I only have one screen
well I have just checked it on the other computer and its working fine, so the problem is here, so where do I go now?
freda

Freda, make sure that you run the speed test several times from multiple locations on Speedtest.net. A single test can vary widely, especially if you are testing to a location a ways from you.

What I am curious about is what you are referring to when you say that your memory is showing up at a negative percentage. Are you talking about system RAM or hard disk space?

FYI - 60-70 processes running in the background is not unusual for Vista. That would be around average.
