are they the same thing or will i have to upgrade to a HD computer monitor in 2009 when we all upgrade to High Definition

...?

Isnt HD just higher rez than the standard 480 lines in TV sets?

If that is the case PC monitors have been HD for years...

We're not "upgrading" to HD, rather getting rid of the old Analog airwaves and replacing with digital. Keyword airwaves. Computer monitors won't be affected in the least, neither will TV sets to be honest. If you have an analog TV, you buy a digital to analog converter, and SDTV resolution will stay the same.

excuse me

but im still a bit confused does this mean we dont need hd tv but if we get hd tv's the picture will be much better for gaming and so forth

yup, the difference is that LCDs can take a better cable input. computer monitors arent effected by this, cause generally they arent connected to a broadcasting signal, so having a monitor higher than 480i is not nessecary. But yes, picture quality is better with these higher resoultion TVs as you can increase the amount of details you can show per picture as compared to a lower resoultion. IE the same desktop at 800x600 pixels or the same desktop at 1600x1200 pixels. hope that helps :)

so

that makes those hd lcd tvs better then standard analog tvs tho right with display or should i say eye candy?

woah, hold on, I read TV, HD TV, LCD, Computer Monitor all used in a confusing mix of random words and misunderstandings.

Just to be clear:

TV: Low quality, low resulotion, quite crap to use with computers really.

CRT Monitor: I do believe bigl2007 was refering to this as "Computer Monitor". They are much better than TVs, but big, bulky, and have big pixels compared to LCDs. They're the old monitors.

HD TV: A step higher to CRTs, usually used as TV rather than monitors, big HD TV are often used as gaming monitors for people who want big rather than quality, but for smaller sizes, most people use LCDs.

LCD Monitor: Most LCDs are better than HD TVs for computers, because HD TV have lower response times and resolutions.

LCD TV: Quite similar to LCD Monitors except they come with TV tuners (of course) but may (depending on price/models) have lower resolution.

Plasma TV: Used to be used for big screens, but big LCD TVs are catching up.

My info might be a little off, feel free to correct, I just though i'd make the thread a little more clear.

k

so it depends what you plan on doing cuz me i plan on gaming and i was thinking i would have to upgrade from lcd to HD for monitor plus i was thinking i would have to upgrade my tv to HD TV but now that i hear this i dont think i will have to but i might do it for the heck of it just so i can play ps3 in hd
