leaving computer on for long periods

Hi,

Was wonder what would be a sensible amount of time one could to leave a p.c on.

I'm thinking 10 day's or so.The reason I'm going on holiday, any pitfulls doing this.?

Cheers J

I leave mine on always, but if I was going away and there was nothing the computer was doing (like providing internet or printer access for another computer), then I would turn it off.

I would probably even unplug it from the wall in case of a power outage and the surge that come afterwards, but I'm paranoid like that. :)

I've seen monitors and PSUs go up in smoke as I was watching. Ten days running, unattended? I dont think leaving a home PC running that long without being watched is wise at all. Fire hazard, surge damage, power failures are all possibilities.

OvenMaster, lol thanks,...........going to turn it off, don't care if the p.c blows up BUT I do care if it blows up my flat at the same time.ha ha....not good....,great holiday that will be "a"

Cheers chap's...off it is.

i nvr turn mine off. just restart every now and then.
however, global warming IS real, and turning the comp off would help with mama earth. plus, u save like 300 dollars a yr + just by turning comp off over night. (with old architecture. idk about the new, less power hungry, energy efficient c2d and simular processors)

if there was a reason for it to be on in the first place, then leave it on. just dont leave it on if there is absolutely NOTHING running for those 10 days.

if you have no need to leave it running (like running servers or file sharing), then there wouldn't be any need to leave it on.

but lol, i just gotta laugh at some of the reasons to not leave it on.

fire hazard? geeze, how dirty/old was that pc? i've spilled vodka into a monitor and not had it catch fire. it just popped a few times, smoked a little, and shut off never to turn on again.

He said he's going on a holiday? Maybe he wants to do a remote desktop connection.

Oops... hadn't made it to page 2.

Both of my servers run 24/7, the only time they are off is once every two months for cleaning fans and such -- Or, if there is a power outage, whichever comes first. One is my webserver, and the other is a Folding@Home machine and also the file backup server for my network.

Never had any problems with leaving them on. It puts less stress on the components (heat up = expand, cool down = contract, when turned on and off) when left on.

I'm more worry'd about the thing and blowing or whatever....9 times out of 10 I'm sure it would be fine, but better safe than sorry.

Thanks again.

I've never had a PC blow up on me. I usually leave mine on 24/7 except for restarts and if I need to get inside the case. If you're worried about power surges buy an UPS with surge protection. I've left my PC on when I leave for a few days and it would always go down because of power outages here in FL :(

Well I was only going to do some file sharing but that will have to wait, I'm worryed about power surge damage AND it's going to be unatended too. """"" it just ant worth it like what most are saying if it's not really important then sod it..
