Leaving computer on?

I used to leave my computer on for like weeks and it was stock but now i have a ATI radeon x 1300 pro card and some more ram (1gb) and i added a cooling fan for the card but should i still let it run all the time or should i shut it off at night when i go to sleep or something? I'm trying to figure out how to find the temperature of the card because the software that came with it always says 0 degrees and if i knew how hot it was running i would know whether i should get it run or not.

Well, those extra unused hours are wearing out the life span of your hardware, but that's not much to worry about since it has a really long life span, and you'll probobly upgrade before it dies on you (unless it's a hard drive, those die quicker)

I don't see how it could hurt, aside from your eletric bill :)

I always leave my computer on, and I've never had a problem. I do do an occasional restart, because Windows loves it's restarts. I've never had a hard drive die, and my oldest one is about 3 or 4 years old, running pretty near constantly (my 60gb listed below).

well, with my old win98...i left it on ALL the time...i used to download alot of torrents etc and so i'd just leave it on overnight and come back to it the next moring with a completed download :P

i used that win98 until 2 months ago when i got my new comp (proving it lasted like 8 years) i really dont think that the new hardware out will make much of a difference compared to older hardware but i might be wrong

...so what im trying to say is that i agree that the only thing bad about leaving it on is the electricty bill

It really comes down to how much power you want to waste. If i were you, i would put it in standby overnight, that way it only takes a few seconds to resume it, and it saves alot of power and your components life.

Of course you'd better shut it down.
Any technical has its period of life, and in sometime, sooner or later it will die...

This is very true but, it is a proven fact that turning your computer on and off is actually more harmful then leaving it on all the time. The sudden burst of electricity that you get when you turn on your computer (when done enough) hurts it more than the steady flow of leaving it on all the time. I'm not saying that you should leave your comp on for years at a time, but you can certainly leave it on for a month or two with no problems. Give it a nice restart everyonce in awile (for windows sake), and it'll do just fine.

Very true. The same goes for lights, if you keep turning them on and off, there going to die alot quicker then if you left them on.

Would it be better to hibernate or stand by? I've used stand by a few times but only when I leave the house for a few hours(never have used hibernate). I've never used stand by at night because the fans are tad noisy in a silent room and I have a blue LED 120mm fan on the front of my case that almost lights up haf the room.

Well, how much shorter is the life span of a computer that is turned on and off once or twice a day? I'm going to build a new computer before the end of the year but I'd like to keep my current computer as healthy as possible.

Like someone said before the parts won't die before they are totally out of date (excluding a hard drive because that is made of moving parts that tend to break more easily.) I was just stating that turning it on and off is worse for it than just leaving it on.

they last for many years, computers that are 10 years old still work fine.

Wow, I feel like Im the only one who thinks that you should turn on and off the pc. (Ya, I know Im not but hey)

Not for powers sake or giving it a longer life span, but my pc REALLY slows down after about 24 hours of being on.

The computer does tend to slow down because the memory fills up with files that you no longer need.

My computer has been on for several days straight, but i just havent had the time to restart it.

To tell you the truth I didn't know that :o
Thanks for advice!

Ok, so i hit the sleep button on my keyboard and the computer did what it was suppose to... for like 10 minutes and then by itself came back on! It also did it when i went to the shutdown menu and clicked standby... about another 10 minutes and it came back on. What is going on here?
