When I fall asleep I often just leave my laptop open and when I wake up the laptop is open and the screen is still on, is this bad for the computer? Other times I just close the screen without switching off the computer, is this ok? What should I do- click sleep, hibernate or switch off?

It won't hurt to leave your laptop on as long as it has good ventilation. I leave my M90 on endlessly and have yet to have an issue with it.

One thing. I wouldn't do it. Sleep is ok. Off might be better.
If not on charger Never, Never run it to 0 volts. You will be buying a new battery.
Never ever leave it on a charger after full charge. You Will boil a battery.
Just my suggestion. full or medium charge constant and not over charge.

never thought of that. But my battery never has held a charge for long the whole time I have had it, so it didn't dawn on me. IF you take the battery out, then you could leave it plugged in same as a desktop.

I followed this advice! Its a good idea! But I am now admiring this lovely red X across the battery icon.

I also leave my laptop on all the time without issue. One recommendation I have is to setup the Power Options to blank the screen after x number of minutes of inactivity. That way you won't have the bright screen on all the time and consuming electricity unnecessarily.
