left shift key stopped working

last week i noticed the left shift key on this notebook quit working. the right shift key works fine. if i switch to an external usb connected keyboard both shift keys work fine.

is this as simple as a bad keyboard switch, or could it be a software issue that can be corrected/
 
Most likely just a bad keyboard, replace it. You can also try removing the key to see if anything is underneath of it and maybe cleaning it.
 
i do have a habit of getting cookie crumbs on the keyboard i'll try taking it apart. i just was hoping it might be a keystroke mistake.
