Legal Question

Okay, I have two questions about anti-virus. Do OEM have to be sold with a new machine? Also, if you use OEM copies that have one license code, is it okay to sell the three activations individually? Example, you recive a copy of NAV 2010 OEM, it was one licence XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXX-XXXXX this code can be used 3 times to activate 3 computers. Can the reseller sell the key to only one person? OR can the reseller sell the three activations?

er uh yeah

It would seem to me that you have ONE license. I believe that means you are the only legal holder of the software. The multiple activations allow only you, the holder of the license, to install the software on three of your computers.

In other words, as long as you hold the liscense, you can put the software on three of YOUR machines.

I very seriously doubt that you can sell the three activations to three different people. If you "give" the activation codes to three other people, its my understanding that each of them would have to buy a license to use the software legally.

What software are you asking about, and also, why not just write the manufacturer and ask them what you can do? I'm sure any reputable company would tell you the ins-and-outs of how you are allowed to use their product. Heck, I'd bet that they would be happy someone actually took the time to ask about the legality of transferring ownership.

People not conforming to the legality of sharing/reselling of intellectual properties is part of the problem facing music labels (for instance). If you made something for profit, would you want people distributing it (without your permission) to others for free? I wouldn't!

Law Classes, UGH!!!

Well I'm glad I could be of assistance. I hope to see you around. Computer Forum has a lot to offer, and one of the biggest things is the helpful/friendly moderators. Check out some of the other sections an see what you think of the site.

Cheers,
