Legal?

Hello all,

Is it legal to download a program if you have a LEGAL registration number for the program you're downloading?

I have Windows 2000 Pro on my laptop (pre-installed when I bought it), with a legal Windows 2000 Pro registration number on its bottom. But, I don't have a copy of the OS, or a Restore disk (off lease corporate unit, bought refurb from a local computer store, and it didn't come with anything).

I'm thinking about selling the laptop, and if I do, I want to do a reinstall to wipe the HD clean, first. So, I have no choice but to find a copy of Win2000 Pro to use with my legal registration number.

But, I need to know if it's even legal to download the program in the first place - legal reg. number or not. I think it's okay, but I'm not sure.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Disclaimer: I read all the rules of the forum and from my understanding, this post is well within them.

Edited post for clarity: Line 3 previously read "...a legal Windows registration number on its bottom." I added the words "2000 Pro" to make meaning more clear.

If I'm understanding you right, you're looking to download Windows 2000 Pro? I'm afraid downloading any OS except for Linux distros is illegal.

If you're downloading programs that come with registration numbers, then that's definitely illegal.

Some people offer programs for download that don't come with the registration numbers - just the program. That's what I'm looking for... program only. :)

Thanks for sending the "head's up", though. :D
