ive been reading about lenovo and their customer support and some people getting notebooks that are DOA. im seriously leaning towards getting a thinkpad t61 since its a good notebook and the price is right, just wanted to hear from you guys. some have really good success with their thinkpads and some are just really unhappy. should i just go for it or should i just pay the extra for a dell or sony. i dont want a comp thats gonna give me probs or possibly be DOA. any info pls.

IBM was the original manufacturer of the ThinkPad, and I have an original ThinkPad 750 (Win95) sitting in my closet in my spare computer parts box. It still works and runs like a top with all the ORIGINAL components--even the hard drive. It was manufactured in 1994, so it's pretty old...and here my friend has a Toshiba (4 mos old) and its on its way out. Anyways...these ThinkPads are now made by a Chinese company (Lenovo) so I don't know if they are carrying on the legend of IBM's top-quality characteristics in their PCs and laptops. I do know, though, that a comparable Lenovo laptop is less than a Dell laptop with the same features. I don't like Dell, anyways.

i dont mind a dell but the dell i spec'd with the same components came to be like $300 more than the lenovo. i know that ibm made great machines, but since lenovo took over the quality factor has dropped. but still great notebooks nonetheless. im just afraid that if i do go with the lenovo and have problems it'll be like talking to a brick wall trying to getting help.

Personally I would buy it as it is an amazing laptop. Every computer manufacture has these problems with every computer they make. Another thing is to get extra warranty in case this does happen you can have it repaired. Have you seen the extra security features they have such as the Roll Cage and shock mounted hard drive? I have not seen this type of technology in many laptops today on the market. Also if you spill something such as water on your keyboard, there is holes under your computer that act as drains that will remove most of the water if not all so you probably will not have to worry about spills on it. However I have never tried this on any computer I have as I do not want to risk my laptop having a non-functioning keyboard.

This is a general rule for me. Every document you do save it to an external source such as a USB key or an external hard drive like this if something bad happens the next day you turn on your computer you still have a copy of it and can access it on anyones computer.

i was definetely gonna go with an extended warranty if i go with lenovo. i know the computer is fantastic if everything is working. I just got a bit spooked reading peoples horror stories. i dont want to be one of them.

I definitely +1 on the Extended Warranty, and I would also make it Accidental Damage Coverage. After working in a Service Centre and seeing some of the things that can happen to laptops, this is a must. At least if you (or someone else) spill something on it, drops it, runs it over with a car, etc... you get a replacement, pretty much no questions asked.
