Licencing for MS Office

Hi All,
I bought a dell inspiron about 3 years ago. I bought the office apps as well, but I'm certain they never sent the disks with it - I assumed that they went the same way as the OS and just pre-installled it and I have effectively bought the licence.

Anyways, I'm changing systems so I asked Dell if they could give me the licence I paid for, or send me the disks for a small fee - they wont.

Should I be able to get Dell or MS to send the disks because I've already paid for it 3 years ago? (Office 2003+outlook)

I used to work for a certified microsoft reseller and support center. We were also a system's builder and did OEM installs on machines. I can tell you I have never personally seen a manufactured computer that came with Office unless it was purchased as an add on. I also know the office license very well since I was forced to support it at this job. Any time I ever did an OEM preinstall of Office that was bundled with the reduced OEM price of a brand new system, that license is forever bound to that system. Meaning technically you are legally obligated to sell office with that computer if you sell that computer and the license is non transferable.

That is why Dell will not give you the license key. Also, every OEM install I ever performed I also included the original Office CDs with the machine when the client picked them up.

They won't send you the key. I had an old Dell laptop that came with the cds and the keys. Can't remember if I paid for them or if it was a deal then was 5 years ago. Anyway just use openoffice its the same thing.

As everyone else said your bound by the OEM requirements. Sometimes that small print really gets you!

As someone else said just get openoffice and don't bother buying another office license.

thanks

It was a long time ago but I could swear it was pre-installed - it's so not like me to lose office disks - in fact, I would lock them in a safe!

oh well, a mystery... looks like it'll have to be a pirate copy then....I mean buy the latest from a licensed distributor.

thanks

Not trying to be a dick or anything but I would highly advise you not go that route. The programmer who 'cracks' the software can sneak all sorts of nasties into your system without you knowing and I can almost guarantee you will get registry problens and errors when shutting the program down. Also no updates for the program either. Basically, its really really dumb. :/

AND we don't discuss pirating on this forum so your going to get your thread closed :)

open office does everything you need it too, but with a small performance hit. I will say that in my experience MS office is faster than open office, but open office is compatible and 100% free, so you can't beat that price!

+1 go with open office.

sorry guys,
I new my comments would spark. I don't use pirate software because; a) downloading is a pain in the ass and I can't be arsed doing it. b) what you see is NOT what you get, and c) a & b.
