Does anyone know about the lightscribe drives? Do they need a cartridge to operate?

What else would anyone reccommend for a decent dvd burner drive?

Thanks.............

I dont think the lightscribe drives are worth the money. I have a $60 Sony DVD-RW drive and it works like a charm.

Do you plan on labeling CD/DVD's constantly? Or just occasionally?

If you do, it's probably worth it. However, look into it more and get reviews and comparisons online.

If just occasionally, just get a regular burner.. then use those stick on labels.

No, they dont need a cartridge to operate.

Like Mac OS X says they don't need any external components to burn labels - that's the reason why they're hyped about, you just flip the disk over, pop it back in and burn the label.

I own one, and I have to say they're overrated. Not only does it take between 20 and 40 mins to burn a label, in my opinion there's very little contrast in the resulting images - it seems to me to be very faded, now I'm not sure whether that's a problem with the media that came with the drive or not, but it certainly doesn't seem worth the extra money to buy a drive specifically for lightscribe support.

I've got a Lightscribe and have never used its capabilites to burn directly onto a disc. It takes entirely too long just to burn a label. Otherwise, your Lightscribes are the same quality as most other name brand DVD burners. OH yea, Lightscribe discs cost a bit more than the normal discs. Of course I just use my normal discs and all is ok. Just so you know, the price of Lightscribe DVD burners have come down to within $5-10 or so of non-Lightscribe burners.

i just bought a laptop like 2 weeks ago. didnt realise my burner had lightscribe on it until a few days ago.. the disks seem pretty expensive.. compared to a normal spindle.. might not be worth it.. i wouldnt mind trying one disk just for fun though =)
