Limited Connectivity error

A friend of mine wasn't able to boot his pc so he asked me to reinstall xp. I installed it as well as the motherboard drivers. However, I am unable to connect to the internet with this pc. When I plug in the eithernet cable, it tries to connect but I get an error that says limited connectivity. I have my pc running on the same router and it connects fine. I've checked the device manager and the card looks like it installed the drivers fine. I tried to ping microsoft from cmd and nothing. Here is a pic of the ipconfig. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are getting a 169.254.72.96 local IP address which means you aren't connecting to the router at all. I would suspect that the ethernet port is bad. You can buy a dedicated ethernet card for like $10.

You sure you installed the correct driver? What model of pc is it or what model of motherboard is it?

Thanks for your help. It's a custom box. The motherboard is a gigabyte gam61pm-s2.

I downloaded the drivers from gigabyte. They had two and I tried them both.

Is there anyway to change the ip address or a way to test the built in card? He said it was working before the pc crashed.

Why/how did it crash? power surge/outage?

There is only 1 lan driver on the website.

My understanding is that it was doing an update and his wife hit the power button. It didn't turn back on.

I'll look at the driver again.

Thats a bad sign then and hopefully it didn't do any other damage to the system. An abrupt shut off of power can kill components. Your best bet would be to buy a dedicated NIC card for around $10 at your local computer store.
