Linksys problem?

Ok so I have a Linksys Router and Modem thats probably atleast 4yrs old. Now all the time I have to unplug both Modem and Router cause I keep losing interent connection. My computer is hard wire into it while there are 3 others that are wireless. All having problems with this. That is the only way that solves it. Unplugging and then going to Network Connections and having to repair it a couple times then it is finally connected! My interent provider is Comcast if that matters. But is this a Router/ Modem problem that maybe I need a new one? I know after awhile they do need to be repalced.

If thats the situation what would you recommend to get?
 
Well since your computer is wired to the router, you could find what the problem is by connecting an ethernet cable directly from the modem to your computer. If it still cuts out you know it's something wrong with the modem. If it works, you know you need a new router.
 
Ok I'll have to try that one out, now with the ethernet cable in my computer will the other computers (wireless) still get access to the internet?
 
not if you take the wireless router out. He was just giving you an option to isolate the problem. the modem from comcast will just give you one connection. (wired).
 
No Router is going to stay there. And my modem is from Linksys just Comcast is my internet provider.

So let me get this right, ethernet the modem right into my comp, when I do that only my computer will have internet access, the others won't?

Also how do I direct connect it? do I take the blue cable from the Modem were it says LAN and put the other end into the comp?

Yes the others will lose connection but only for about 5 minutes, just to see what the problem is.

So you take the cable that comes out of the modem (doesn't matter what color it is) and just plug it into your computer instead of the router. If it still works you know it's something wrong with the router. If the internet still doesn't work you know it's a problem with the modem. You can buy replacements for these basically anywhere. Once you know what the problem is you can reconnect the router and then buy a replacement for whatever is broken.
 
Ok thing is the internet goes whenever, its just randomly so I will have to have the interent direct into my comp for awhile to figure that out. OR is it when I hook it up directly and it works on know its the Router hands down?
 
The longer you have the computer hooked up to the router, the more you will know what the problem is. If you have the computer hooked up to the router for a long time and the internet keeps cutting out, and then you have the computer hooked up directly to the modem and it doesn't cut out, you know hands down that it's the router. You basically have 3 possible outcomes.

1. Computer connected directly to the modem and the internet works. Something is wrong with the router.

2. Computer connected directly to the modem and the internet doesn't work. Something is wrong with the modem.

3. Computer connected directly to the modem and the internet doesn't work. Something is wrong with the modem AND the router.

You won't be able to determine if it is the 3rd one unless you find the internet doesn't work, you buy a new modem, and it still doesn't work when you hook your computer up to the router.
 
Ok thanks I will try that out later on today when everyone doesn't need to be on the interenet.

If its the Modem or the Router what brand would you recommend for me to replace it with?
 
I'm not too sure about modems, let's just hope that's not the problem haha. But any router should do. Internet signals are not brand-specific, you will get internet from basically any wireless router you install. Linksys is a well known company. Let me know how the test works though. If it ends up the modem is broken I can do some research.
 
Ok so far I have it directly connect from the Modem to the computer and I can't really tell anything yet but I mean I have internet connection, just gotta see if it stays that way..
 
Ok I reconnected everything back to how it was. I had it sit for a decent time for me to be able to know its the router that needs new. Now all I gotta do is get my butt to Bestbuy and pick one up!
 
Hey, try flashing your linksys router to DD-WRT firmware. It may save your router. Its very easy to do as long as you take it slow and read instruction.

Small chance of bricking your router, but if you already have the plan to buy a new one, it wont hurt to try.
