Linux, Dell & ATi, Darn

Well I keep running into the same issue; my Dell optiplex can never load any Linux distro after the ATi drivers have been installed. I've tried sh'ing the file which doesn't work it comes to the xorg.conf, I've even tried compiling a distro-specific driver based on the instructions at cchtml.com! What happens is either the distro freezes at boot or the ATi control centre fails to work. Rig specs:

AMD Athlon64 3800+ 'Orleans' (AM2)
Dell motherboard (NF430 chipset)
WD800JD HDD (80GB)
X1300 (half height)

Oh, and I've tried: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Debian, Mepis, PCLinuxOS, OpenSUsE and Fedora 7.

the ati driver installs from a shell script, you have to download it and run it via terminal. Read ATI's instructions on their webpage.

I've done:

Envy script, 'sudo sh' the script as it says to, used apt and used synaptic all with the same black screen, it happens on every distro as well. Although the resolution is fine. Oh and the run in terminal I chose to do an automatic install it creates errors, I'll try again tonight to replicate the results.
