Linux, Enough Said

Actually, there is plenty more to say about this. I'm just wondering, see I love the idea that linux is free to use, edit, and redistribute. But however, I hate it how I can't just plug in a driver cd and use a new camera or printer. And even if I can find a download for a driver, I can't just double click it and install it, no no no I have to type a shit load of commands in a command prompt to get it working and an hour and a half later you have people saying oh yes linux is so much better. But wheres photoshop (cs3 preferably?) not gimp, where ms office 2007 (not open office), wheres autocad and all the games. Wheres visual studio and no i dont mean ...well whatever you guys use but hey, i love intelisense. Wheres encarta encyclopedia, or quicken... not gnucash or whatever because they suck. wheres all the good stuff thats on windows and mac that linux doesnt have.

i hear people complaining all the time and they say out of all things linux is better but from what i see, linux doesnt do anything unless you spend an hour or two to get it to work, and even then it doenst do exactly what you want.

help lol, i want it, something draws me too it. I want to be a linux kid for some reason. but it doesnt have everything that windows does and that creates a gap that i can't quite jump over unless i want to fall into this giant "no operating system" hell lol.

well if you get use to it it is much more standard. I can say the same thing about ms...

Where is the web server, where is the good built in firewall, where is the freeware.

they have there differences. That is why the uber geeks developed "virtual desktop".

That is why the saying windows+linux=god is true

Keep in mind linux is an entirely different OS then windows. those programs you listed arent on linux because they havent been made for linux. It's not that linux sucks because they dont have those programs on it, its because those comapanies havent made there software available on linux.
If you cant live without those programs then use windows, it's that simple.

Agreed with Motorxdude, good point indeed.
So after all this time X2BreakOfFate comes to his mind that linux is not windows :P:P

You want Linux for the wrong reasons.

People usually move to Linux because they are unhappy with Windows. You are obviously a happy windows user who is very attached to their windows only software. That coupled with the obvious not wanting to take any time to learn and understand Linux is why Linux is not for you.

Incidentally, I've never had a digi cam or camera phone that didn't work just by plugging it in. As for the printer, the drivers are already installed you just have to choose the correct one if it's not auto detected.

software and hardware is made to make profit for the company. to do so they produce to market demands. there is not a large enough demand for non MS and Mac platforms for them to develop towards them. that is why you wont see too many high end applications for linux distros. there are plently of FLOSS alturnatives out there that work fine. if you fail at using them then you could try things like wine and cedega.

the bottom line is you are expecting every thing to work right out of the box form a product that is designed from unpaid volentiers that wirte code for fun and love of the ideology of FLOSS and the linux community. they have no requirement that what they make has to run on every thingy. that is because they are not trying to sell a product to the mainstream. be thankful that people are willing to write code for you so dont have to.

if you want your OS to be "easy and simple", keep using windows or mac. untill you change your attitude about "how things should be" keep using windows.

I use Unix because it kicks ass as a development environment. Visual Studio sucks Donkey Kong. All you need is the g++ compiler and a good programming text editor like Crimson or notepad2.

and the more lines of code your program is the better it is!.....no, text editors are only good for getting started in programming and for small projects. anything serious needs to be done in an IDE.

Yeah, but have you ever looked inside one of the resource files or stdafx.h files created by Visual Studio? Full of unnecessary garbage. Manually editing your code allows you to create a clean project of exactly what you want. An IDE might do the work for you, but it doesn't necessarily make it better.

i've been using ubuntu 7.10 for a month now, theres a bit of a learning curve w/ linux no doubt, but i really like it, it works great, the only thing i have a problem w/ was my scanner
but i dont really need it for this computer, i also set my xp hard drive as slave so i have access
to all the files on there

well, do not complain bout linux, both have pros and cons. security risk in windows is much higher. and if u think that u cant get wat u want in linux u r totally wrong. with enough time spend, u can actually do anything u like on linux, u can even tweak and edit the code becoz its open source while if u r using windows, that it, u can only customize wat they allow u to do. linux is not, there is freedom of editing, redistributing in the open source community. so pls change ur paradigm and if u do not like linux, stick to ur windows and be prepared to pay more money in time to come.

Huh? He wasn't complaining about Linux. In fact, he gave it a pretty good recommendation. The scanner problem is due to closed source drivers.

well, i am mentioning bout X2BreakOfFate.
i wont blame anyone who cant find linux drivers for their hardware as i am also having the same problem with my scanner.

Thats the beuty of open source. Have a problem? Report it to developers and they will have a patch for it or include it in there next update.

u mean drivers for my scanner? i am using hp scanjet 4570c and it seems that there is no driver for it and report have been given to hp requesting them for drivers or at least their chips information. but this fell on deaf ears, perhaps next time if i get a scanner, i will get a linux compatible scanner.
