Linux for new user.

I have never used linux before and have thought about giving it a try. My laptop has vista on it which I am not a big fan of, and figured it would be worth switching the operating system. Can anyone recommend a version of linux that would be good for someone new to the os?

Also, is the install fairly straightforward?

Ubuntu is the really popular one. Good transition from windows to it.

Install is pretty easy. Just pop it in, boot to it, click "install ubuntu" and there should be an option for "Erase everything and install."

Oh. Well that is far easier than I anticipated. Was expecting to have to wipe the hard drive and everything before being able to install. If Ubuntu does it all for you that sounds like no hassles at all.

Personally, I recommend Xubuntu (it is ubuntu with XFCE instead of the crappy Unity) or Linux Mint. But that call is up to you.

So I am presently download Xubuntu. I am considering doing a dual boot with windows in case I ever need to use it. Will I need the disks for windows to do this or will linux just set itself up along side windows?

I ran the dual boot with xubuntu and got an error during partitioning. As a result it no longer recognized an operating system if I tried to boot without the install disk.

I have installed xubuntu on its own and it works fine. Only problem is I had only backed up music and video. Forgot about my photos and lost them. At least the computer is up and running again.

OpenSuse is a good one to try too. :)

I like opesuse and IMO they do the best job at presenting the KDE desktop. I have used Kubuntu and Fedora with KDE and the experience was horrible in comparison to running gnome. On the other side though openSuse is limited on packages in comparison to a Debian operating system especially say if this person ever tries to replace Windiws and wants to use some of the proprietary available Debian is far better support in this way.

Hey man let us know how the experience is with XFCE.
