linux layout

Any versions you are likely to use will have a nice graphics user interface for the most part this will be relatable to a windows system, but you will be using the shell terminal a lot more, and this can mostly be related back to a dos windows.

are the variations from version to version subtle, or are a lot of them like using a totally different os? because (1) i have no idea which version i would use, and (2) i dont really know how i would go about finding that out. i checked out the linux website a little bit, but im thinking i should go back and find out more, because im really at a loss where i should start.

some variations are small and some are larger. for example some distros use KDE as thsir desktop environment and some use GNOME. there are many other desktop environment avalable for linux. the differences between kde and gnome may be bigger when compairing two distros. however when compairing distros that use kde the look and feel are similar.

note: when i say desktop environment i refer to the GUI similar to the windows desktop

here you can find some screenshots of KDE on SuSE 9.3 http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?release=322&slide=8&title=suse+linux+9.3+screenshots

and here are some screenshots of GNOME on Fedora Core 4 http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/s...slide=1&title=fedora+core+4+gnome+screenshots

so im a little confused...i read somewhere that linux costs money, like 30-50 bucks, and i also read that you can download it...are some versions only accessible by buying them? or are you paying for an official disc for, say, putting on multiple computers? i mean, i wouldnt mind buying a version, but if you can just get it somewhere for free...

yes, some versions can only be purchased, but most can be downloaded for free. they can also be bought cheap. though there are many other online sellers i buy my stuff here - http://www.pctech101.com/

For someone new i would recomend SuSE or Mandriva.
