I have a old laptop, 5-10 years old running Windows Xp at the moment, i was thinking of install some version of linux on it, but what would be a good dist for a newbie?

Pretty much any LXDE or XFCE type of distro should run okay.

Depending on specs it could probably run Gnome or KDE okay, although if it has something like GMA graphics using the Cinnamon UI will bring it to it's knees.

Lubuntu or Crunchbang would be decent candidates. You could also install Debian with whatever UI you prefer (which also holds true with really any other distro).

Cinnamon and Gnome use the same amount of resources from the GPU, KDE is a little heavier.

As said above anything xfce, LXDE or if you can find a distro you are comfortable with LXQT would be best.
