Is it possible for me to overwrite windows with linux, keeping all my data, or at least the necessary apps i have such as Adobe Photoshop, and MS Office.

Also, how would i go about running these programs? Will photoshop run on linux or will i need one of those emulator things?

Also, what would be the best derivation of linux for a beginner to use, i was looking a Ubuntu.

answer : no. If you're going to overwrite C: then you loose everything. you have to put all your docs and whatsoever on another partition. But then again you will have to install 'ntfs3g' to read/write on your windows partition

2. Also, how would i go about running these programs? Will photoshop run on linux or will i need one of those emulator things?

answer : Depends. Adobe photoshop may or may not run at all. yes you will need this emulator' thing' ,it's called WINE and its official version is called Crossover office. Using them you will be able to run some many windows apps on linux

3.Also, what would be the best derivation of linux for a beginner to use, i was looking a Ubuntu.

answer : yes, ubuntu is a good headstart, you can also try LinuxMINT (created off ubuntu), or you can try PCLOS (PCLinuxOS).

thanks, and i suspect i know the answer, but you would recommend linux over xp?

also, on my laptop, which is fairly slow, will it run faster than xp? 2.2ghz celeron processor, 256 ram, 64 integ. graphics?

I'd suggest that if you want to use Linux that you use alternative applications to what you use now. i.e. openoffice instead of MS Office.

I believe some versions of MS Office MAY run but don't think Photoshop does at all. If you do manage to get a windows application running, there is no guarantee on stability or that it will function in the way you are used to.

Performance really depends on your DE (desktop environment). With only 256, you would see the best speed benefits from XFCE.
As you've already looked at Ubuntu, I suggest you look at Xubuntu.

Ubuntu uses GNOME, Xubuntu uses XFCE.

hey simon ,photoshop does work. maybe you didn't make it work but i did not with wine but with crossover.CS wont work at all nor does CS2 but photoshop 7 does, yes there is an issue with stability but i manage to overcome it. also Outlook express works, Media player classic,MS access, word and excel 2000 works, winrar and winzip does also. i haven't had the chance to test other windows software but when i do i'll update

Isn't Photoshop 7 quite old though?

You tried Outlook Express? What on earth possessed you lol

I don't much care for getting windows apps working under Linux, there are plenty of Linux alternatives.

It wasn't about what possessed me, its that we have a linux guru in the office so its like a competition between me and him ,anyhows all the crap i do i do it on ubuntu and PCLOS not suse. I once ruined a suse box so to this day i don't try anything stupid on my own suse box.. yeah PS7 is quite old now and like you said there are many alternatives.
