Linux Question...

Um, i recently switched to the second semester in my school, which brought me to Advanced computer math, which is basically learning to program with java. However, my teacher is a linux only kind of person and i had a few questions about it.

I'm firmiliar with knoppix since thats the basic boot i use to do work on my computer but recently ive been wondering about the other linux based os's.

originally i thought linux was the name of the actual operating system, untill i found out its the basis of a set of operating systems, sort of like windows is to Win Xp, vista, me, 2000, etc... But, if im understanding correctly, there is no real superior OS as far as linux is concerned (like Xp is to windows), but more of an array of linux based operating systems where each is preffered to a different task.

My question is which is the best for what and what are the differences between all the different ones. Also, a list of the different ones would be appricieated too.

Linix is actually the core, or basic part of the OS, to be technical, the kernel. There are other parts added on to that, and that becomes a linux distribution. You may find some such as Redhat that use a window manager called Gnome, while others use a window manager called KDE. The window manager controls your desktop and much of your functionality. Play around with both and see which you like. Some of the most popular distros are: Fedora Core, Suse, Mandriva, Knoppix, Linspire, Ubantu and Mepis. All have their good and bad points. Linspire is easy to install, Suse and Mandrive include every software package known to man, Ubantu and Mepis are smaller in size.

Play with them all, and see what suits you best.
 
Aight in the past 48 hours ive increased my linux knowlege by like a million. Right now im dual booting win xp and SuSE. Ive figured out everything there is to know about how linux and its distrobutions work as far as concept. Right now im just gettin used to linux, which is reallllllly different then windows, which i have to admit i wasnt entirly excpecting (To an extent). Ill keep you guys updated with my questions as i go along. Thanks for the help

-Question one
When i went to install the Suse system i downloaded the 64 bit version (which is compatible with the pentium D processor, or so i thought). I go to install it and during the installation i keep getting all these instilation errors saying failed to install so and so file. I kept playin with it and just decided to switch to the 32 bit version. This installed fine, but at the beggining it says "cool computer but...your installing a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit system" which worries me a bit... ne ideas?
 
K got another question, is there a plugin or something similar that allows windows media player files to run on linux?

- where did you go and/or how did you increase your knowledge i.e. websites, books, etc
 
Hey everybody
I have a quetion about the SUSE "Live DVD" edition. I just got it last week to be familiar with the system before I instal the boot version on my future EPIA that should be my home server. My problem is, the SUSE could not recognize the WLAN a was using with WinXP. In onter word, I can not go online. Doese anybody no what I have to setup. It is my first time to use a linux sistem and I realy enjoy it but I also have a lot of challenges. I need your helps
