Linux&Security

Now I've finally managed to install Ubuntu&Get the internet working. Which is good news, no more having to stick with Windows, though I won't be getting rid of it for a while.

Anyhow...

What kinda Firewall and virus/spyware/whatnot protection do I need to get, if any? I know Linux is more secure than Windows, but am I safe from script kiddies (AFAIK the only real threat on the net unless you're an idiot...I don't spend THAT kind of life) without any special software?

virus/spyware not really needed

basically just be careful what you give your password to (you know, when the screen pops up asking for a password to do admin stuff) - it will always say what app is requesting it

basically this is the key to the security.

in terms of firewalls there is loads, but generally the services are closed tight by default so its not a whole issue so long as your router does some basic h/w firewalling

You have nothing to worry about. The only reason you'll need an AV program is if you share files with Windows users, but even then, it's just as a goodwill gesture to them, as you're in the clear regardless.

You shouldn't waste too much time fretting over other security areas as well. This is Linux, not Windows - system-altering tasks don't run by default or without your permission. Relax, sit back, and enjoy it!

Linux is quite secure by default. There are special security programs and kernel patches and access control restrictions and intrusion detection for servers that will be wide out in public view, but for a desktop user you don't need to do anything special.

If you run Wine in Linux, the Wine environment can become polluted by adware and spyware and whatnot, but getting rid of it will never be more difficult than uninstalling wine, removing the ".wine" directory from your home folder, and reinstalling Wine for a fresh start. Just use the Linux version of Firefox instead of the Wine-provided Internet Explorer and you should have no trouble at all.
