I downloaded a tar.gz file that I want to install but i cant seem to get it to work. My distro is Xubuntu and I went into the terminal and installed builidng essential. Next I typed this in for my synatx (Gpredict is the name of the program i want installed)....."tar -xvzf gpredict-0-5.99.7.tar.gz" and then i hit enter and it says no such directory.

Um... try "man tar" for a start.
Maybe just "tar <filename>" might work? I'm not in Linux right now so I can't research it for you, but tar usally works fine. Maybe you can use file-roller? I know it comes with GNOME...

try typing tar -xvzf ./gpredict-0-5.99.7.tar.gz
I'm not running Linux right now either but in Linux you need to tell the computer where the file is. the ./ indicated the directory you are in.
