Linux Troubles

I'm having a really hard time installing programs on Linux specifically Ubuntu 10.10. I'm trying to install Java which I have but I have no configured it. I'm so confused I'm ready to buy Windows 7 for my desktop. I've looked for simple answers to this and other questions but I'm starting to get fed up. Its a great operating system when it does what I want. So if someone could provide me with a simple step by step of configuring java in Linux it would be greatly appreciated.

Just the JDK. I have installed because it is under system preferences sun java 6 plugin control it but in firefox there is no little check box that says enable java? Also when I go on the java site is says I don't have the most recent version.

Ubuntu team is recommending use of OpenJDK instead of Sun JDK and the latter was dropped in Ubuntu 10.4 repositories, I gather.

you could try this in a terminal, though:

Code:
sudo update-alternatives --config java

^^ I will try that. It seems like it is almost a part of firefox that is not allowing Java to be installed because I added an add-on but when I go under the add-ons page there is no java add-on that I installed.

Okay here is what I got. I must be missing one little thing because like I said before i have it under system -> preferences -> Java Control Panel and go to the about section it says I have Java 6 update 24 on my system but Firefox doesn't recognize it. I would love to get this issue worked out.

So I can better help you can you explain what you are using in firefox and what you are trying to do with it. I might be able to better help you if I can get it running on my system.

Do you get to the java embedded frame? Once I hit print I had to click run to on 2 java applets but java embedded frame seems to hang on me.

Have you installed all the java updates? They are a pain in the ass to install and come in separate installers and no combination installers.

This thread is a little misguided, are you wanting to write Java or are you wanting to simply use an applet?

I got it for a while and then it didn't come up anymore. Maybe it is the website. I just decided to use my Win 7 laptop to print them.

AE7: I just want to use the applet.

Late response:

Using the applet does not need the JDK, rather you need the JRE.

Try
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sun-java-community-team/sun-java6
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install sun-java6
