Hi all,
I would like to install linux ubuntu 5.10 on my computer becuase i think it is a must have! I downloaded the image file from the ubuntu download site, the option that said install. After i burned it i noticed on the site it says preview, is that a trial version? or is it the full operating system i can use on my machine?? will it expire after some time? will i not have full resources of the OS in what i downloaded and burned?

The next question is : how do i install it? i know this could be a broad subject but i just want the starting outline and then i will teach myself by reading and trial and error? Do i put the CD in and let the PC boot up from the CD i burned, like i do for windows?

Thanks to everyone who can contribute.

it will not expire and is a full version.

to install simply make your cd/dvd drive the first boot device.
then place the cd in and reboot. (just like windows)

after that just follow the instructions.

hi there calling on all linux experts,
its me again, i installed ubuntu 5.10 on my PIII 700MHZ 256mb, 80GB hdd with 4 partitions. After the installation process and after i logged on i cant get the user graphical interface to open, it says: "Failed to start X server. it is likely not set up correctly. would u like to view the x server output....." . i click no, then it says "the x sever is now disabled. restart GDM when it is configured correctly."

Does it have anything to do with the screen resolution or my video card?? i am using an old video card from about 95 and i got alittle comfused by the intallation screen which asked me to remove the resolutions i do not want, becuase it was worded very strangly, or something i am not used to may. i logged on again and go my prompt XXX@ubuntu$ : startx (i typed) and still gave the same error message in a gray box in a blue screen.

 everything was going fine until this happened, i even had it installed with windoes 98 and 2000 in the same HDD.
