Linux

Is there any real advantage to having a Linux based operating system? I've got a second HDD, the 160 Gb in my sig, that I'm currently not using and was thinking about throwing a second OS on it other than XP which I have on my 500 Gb. I was looking into Ubuntu and just was trying to figure out what's so good about it. Thanks in advance.

ubuntu? nothing really, probably just eye candy, but that's just me :P. if you haven't ventured in the world of open source it's good you do it.
You'll be surprise at the amount of free apps available for linux but other than that.
Linux is more secure than windows, that's one of it's biggest advantage and there's a lot to learn, new things to learn about it everyday.

Ubuntu is the LITE and FAST. I was amazed how fast Firefox opened in it.

I ran Ubuntu 8.10 live off the disk two days ago to partition my C: drive so
I could install Windows 7 as my second OS.
(Windows and Paragon would not let me muck with my C: partition XD)

I may just create another partition and actually install Ubuntu for real.

There's only one real way to find out if you're going to like it.

Ubuntu is not a bad way to start learning what Linux currently has to offer. You can grab one of the Live disk images to try it before installing too. If you are up for a challenge and want to gain a better understanding of how things work, try Gentoo to roll your own. It can be a fun (or frustrating) hobby or a useful tool depending on how you use it.

As for advantages, that depends on what you hope to accomplish.
