ok i have finally decided to get a laptop instead of a desktop due to the transportation issue.havent decided one yet.my budget is around $900.plan to run games(not necessarily at max settings),a few simulation programs and watch movies. do suggest a good one.
one more issue i am concerned about is whether i can install Linux distros say FC5 along with XP or maybe say Vista?
i have seen my friends struggle with Linux and XP on a desktop because the boot loader goes haywire and stuff like that.has anyone tried out such a combo on your notebooks.if yes what are the probs that you faced.

This may fall into an operating system category, but I've installed WinXP along with a few Linux Distros for Testing. Haven't used Fedora though. You can do a web search on it and I'm sure you'll find step by step tutorials on it at a lot of Linux Forums. As for the boot loader, as long as you dont keep messing with it, it should run fine. If it boots up the first time, leave it alone and it'll stay working.

Laptops and Linux can be tricky, as they don't have readily available drivers for some laptops (usually older models, or REALLY new ones). Research the laptop you want, and see if anyone has gotten the distro you want on it. Today it's less of an issue, but a few years back it was a pain in the butt.

I dual boot with my desktop right now, never had it mess up before. When I get my laptop for college I plan to do the same thing, probably use Ubuntu.
