Hi I need a list of operating systems and need to explain what types of computing devices they are used on. But cannot use windows! I have looked on google there are loads but would prefer the best ones to use and the latest ones???

Might want to explain that one a little different. Just about all programs require some form of a window environment. That i think will leave pretty much just dos.

What type of programs you running that you can't use windows? Many old programs like for programming older equipment in the industrial field require dos for example.
Explain it in more detail. then again you have access to both with windows.

This is the exact question I have been asked if that helps.....

Windows is the most widespread operating system but there are others.

Name at least five other current operating systems and explain what types of computing devices they are used on.

I did come across that page but wasn't 100% if they were all in current use and don't understand what it means when it says the types of computing devices there used on...

I am new to all this and with computers, so just trying to figure it all out :-)

Every one of your posts is asking us to do your homework, research it yourself and you may learn something. At the very least give us an idea on your own thoughts and open a discussion.

That is a complete list and if you click on the link of the OS it describes each OS, when it was made, by whom it was made and for what platform.

I think this could be broader than Linux,Windows,Mac,Unix/BSD

Cisco IOS is technically an OS... JunOS as well used in Juniper firewalls and routers. etc...

Think outside the desktop.

Here's a few off the top of my head that are in common use today:

  • Linux - There are countless versions of this that run on everything from PCs to cell phones to routers and much more.
  • Android - OS designed for mobile touch screen devices, most commonly seen on mobile phones, but is on several current and upcoming tablet PCs. Also used on the Barnes & Noble Nook (eBook Reader)
  • Chrome OS - Not technically released yet, but there is a developer's version that anyone can download. Designed for low powered computers, specifically netbooks.
  • Mac OS - Apple's operating system that they use on their laptops and desktops.
  • iOS - Apple's mobile operating system, seen on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
These are the big guys (other than Windows), however anything with a user interface, i.e., anything that allows you to navigate data or options with some sort of input device (keyboard, touch screen, etc) has an operating system. If you need more, there are quite a few operating systems exclusive to cell phones, digital cameras, MP3 players, video game devices and the like. These are all "computers" in the strictest sense of the word.
