Liteon shw-160p6s dvdrw troubles....

I recently purcahased a Liteon shw-160p6s dvdrw drive. It was to my understanding, that is to say I was informed by the packaging at Wal-Mart, that this drive was not only able to read DVD's but write them as well. As well as being fully operational with DVD RW's.

However, Windows XP (HE, SP1), refuses to acknoledge the fact that this drive is capable of writing dvd's. It will read dvd's. It will burn cd's (it's my understanding these use different lasers). But it will not burn dvds.

Windows seems to identify the drive as a DVD-R drive. When it's quite clear, or perhaps the box lied to me, that it's a DVD-RW. The speed said something like 32x 16x 8x as pertained to DVD's, but it appears only the 32x matters at the moment, as I can't burn anything.

A little bummed out about the situation, because i intended to back up my files before I wiped the hard drive, using the burner.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

*grovels for help*

Yes, this is in fact a duel layer DVD burner.

There are no 32x DVD drives. The fastest right now is 18x(or maybe slightly faster...) However, this drive is a 16x. Eh, the rest of the specs are on that link above :P

How are you trying to burn? You need some sort of program loaded to burn information. If you want drag and drop access though say My Computer, you must install some other application with this feature. My program of choice is Deep Burner. It's free(just google it) and does very well for data disks. However, this is not drag and drop though explorer, you must load everything in Deep Burner's window then burn from there.

Mow! ^_^

o.O;

Wow, I didn't think it would be that fast. Well, thank you, oh godly one of computer knowledge. I'm just now starting to upgrade my poor comp, and forums like these have been a real lifesaver. I thank you for your time, and I am forced to humbley grovel at your feet in (digital) servitude and reverence.

Many thanks, I'll be sure to try this out, and see where it goes.

And yes....32x....I am a silly goose.
